Overview
In August 2008, Sunderland City Council and Balfour Beatty Construction (Northern) Limited agreed contracts for the £14.4 million remodel of Biddick School Sports College.
The remodel includes hi-tech teaching and learning spaces linked to existing areas by a large flexible space that can be used for the performing arts and other activities. Key features also include a relocated learning resource centre.
Biddick School is the latest partnership between Sunderland City Council and Balfour Beatty, who have already secured contracts to rebuild Washington School and create three Sunderland Model Academies. It also builds on a £16 million agreement already reached between the council and technology provider RM to implement a managed ICT service and install state-of-the-art computer systems in the city’s BSF schools.

Construction: Part new build, part refurbishment and remodelling
Designer / Builder: Balfour Beatty Construction (Northern) Limited
Biddick School Sports College is highly regarded in the local community and is
consistently oversubscribed for admissions to year 7. As a result
of comprehensive consultation with the local community and staff,
parents, pupils and governors, a new teaching block will be constructed within
the confines of the existing site.
Originally considered for replacement school, this proposal consists of replacement of 2-storey and single storey main teaching blocks currently considered unsuitable for teaching. The main hall, music, drama and sports provision will be retained. The site is very restricted and careful planning in design will be required. During construction it will be necessary to accommodate some pupils in temporary accommodation. Despite the restrictions of this site it is not proposed that this school will be relocated.
There is a commitment to enhance the already well-developed school
intranet system and the school is part of a pilot programme for
the implementation of a VLE (Virtual Learning Environment). It is
also a designated Specialist Sports College and will be developed
as a hub for Vocational Training programmes.
